The Great Nova Scotia Bakery Tour

One thing I always look for when visiting a new place is their local bakery. I love trying signature delicacies, or looking out for new things! I’ve been known to emerge from a bakery carrying a box that was one of everything in it…! Travelling through Nova Scotia the last three years filming Trailer Travels, I’ve cultivated a list of some of my favourite bakeries, as well as my favourite thing they have. Here’s the Great Nova Scotia Bakery Tour! Be sure to add them into your own road trip itineraries!

Red Knot, Tatamagouche

You’ll find the best pastries outside of France here. Literally, no bad choices. Also a great selection of sourdough breads that have become a staple in our home! My newest obsession? Their scrap loaf which is made up of croissant dough, and let me tell you…this is unbelievably tasty.
Fav: Almond croissant. Always check what their feature danish is though because they are always incredible.

Farmer’s Daughter, Whycocomagh

I love stocking up on all kind of goodies here when we venture to Cape Breton. Our priority is always their bags of cookies. We never leave the counter without at least 4 varieties! It’s a popular spot for lunch as well. They make these great homemade pizza pocket things with various fillings that are hearty and delicious if you have time for more than baked goods! Though you can always get it as takeout and reheat yourself as well.
Fav: It’s a tie between the Garlic Cheese Biscuits & Snickerdoodle cookies

La Have Bakery, La Have

This is a really interesting destination because the bakery is housed in what used to be an imperial bank. They’ve kept a lot of the original decor but certainly made it their own. I tried so many different kids of square cookie bars here, I couldn’t pick a favourite but the Molly bar was delicious and unique. Also a BIG fan of their frosted brownie…if you’re a fan of thick icing 🤤 There’s also a fantastic general store in the basement and a makers market and used bookstore around the back. It’s truly a destination.

Hennigars Farm Market, Wolfville

This is one of my favourite places to stop when in Wolfville. They are known for their donuts but it’s the sweet potato biscuits that bring me in! While there, you can also stock up on produce, gifts, and they have a pretty stocked fudge counter too! If you’re a alcoholic cider fan, they have a really unique variety they make with their own apples, in collaboration with a local brewery.
Fav: Sweet Potato Biscuits are an original flavour and texture that I just love. Makes a great breakfast sandwich!

Sissiboo Coffee Roaster & Cafe

You have two locations to choose from here: Annapolis Royal or Bear River. As implied in the name, they do roast their own own coffee in several varieties. The also make the best iced latte I’ve ever had!! They have a rotating menu so it’s hard to recommend what to go for, but everything we’ve tried is touch notch so far!
Fav: If they have a caramelized onion sweet potato tart on the menu, GET THAT. It was so deliciously sweet and savory.

German Bakery Saschen Cafe, Annapolis Royal

Located in downtown Annapolis Royal, this bakery & restaurant will literally transport your tastebuds to Germany. Be warned – there is SO much selection here! I love the dark dough and many jam-filled goodies. I’m a big fan of buying one of everything to share with Tyson so we can try as many things as possible but there were way too many choices for me to do that here!
Fav: anything with jam in it!

Marguerite Boutique & Provisions, Cheticamp

While filming in Cheticamp, a friend told me I should check out this place and am I ever glad we did! Other than the fact it was the cutest little cafe and general store I’ve ever seen (there’s a retro living room set up), it also had some very delicious baked goods on display. It’s a small selection but it packs a LOT of flavour. We got 3 of the 5 offerings that morning. While I know you can get a blueberry scone in a lot of places, this one was, dare I say – a perfect scone. It was crunchy on the outside without being too crunchy. It had the perfect amount of icing drizzle without being overpowering. The inside was so soft and perfectly baked.

Brookfield Bakery, Brookfield

I love their donuts, and colorfully iced cupcakes here but their display case is literally chock full of delicious choices. This family owned business has been around for generations. You can stock up on bread, pies and jams too!
Fav: The almond pastry is something I’ve never had anywhere else and I looooove it.

As our travels continue, I’m sure I’ll be adding new and exciting places to this list! If you have a favourite bakery I need to know about it, email me here and let me know about it! 🙌
